Maldives map

Before you go on vacation to the Maldives or spend you honeymoon there like I did, first you need to know where exactly are you going to?

Maldives seen from the air

The first impression of the Maldives from the air would look like in the picture above… It’s all about small islands…

World Maldives Map

The Republic of Maldives is situated in the Indian Ocean.

The Maldives Islands consists of 1,190 islands grouped in 26 atolls stretching more than 800 km from north to south: crossing the equator at their south end.

Maldives Map of the Atols and airports

We repeat: the islands are small and so are the airports :-) The Maldives are located about an hour’s flight southwest of Sri Lanka in the Indian Ocean.

You can see 26 atoll formations, comprising over more than thousand islands and scattered like gem stones in a north to south direction. Only 199 of all the islands are inhabited (population about 240.00) and 75 Maldives’ islands have been set aside exclusively for tourist resorts.

A submerged mountain chain forms the base on which the coral reefs are built. The islands began forming 3,000 to 5,500 years ago by carbonate sediment:

  • derived from these coral reefs and
  • deposited by waves and currents.

Their low elevation makes the Maldives particularly vulnerable to storms, the late tsunami and changes in sea level due to global warming. In fact: this country is slowly disappearing in the sea, so Maldives maps will soon be a part of history…

Maldives Sunset

With this blog I want to show my holiday in the Maldives and all the planning and information before going on vacation to the Maldives.

I do love sunsets, but when it comes to the name of my site: Maldives Sunset, I want to express both the beauty of the islands and the sadness that due to global warming, the Maldives are disappearing in the sea.

So enjoy Maldives sunsets as much as you can, because one day, it won’t be there anymore…
